Waratahs sweating on Hanigan injury

Wallabies flanker Ned Hanigan has sustained another knee injury during the Waratahs' 55-29 pre-season defeat to the Highlanders.

Hanigan, who had come on as a substitute for the last 20 minutes, fell awkwardly in the closing stages of the game. The 22-year-old had only recently returned from an extended spell on the sidelines, having injured his knee against England at Twickenham back in November.

Waratahs coach Daryl Gibson said it still had to be determined whether Hanigan had suffered a recurrence of the injury that had resulted in his previous lengthy lay-off.

"We're not sure whether it's a [recurrence] of his MCL that he's had a long lay-off from," Gibson told the Canberra Times.

"We'll be checking that over the next couple of days but apart from that, [it is] just the usual sore bodies from their first hit-out.

"He's getting iced up and we'll assess him in the morning [Saturday] and see if he needs further scans but hopefully it's just a short icing and he'll be back up."
