Glasgow Warriors have announced that winger Walter Fifita’s time at the club has come to an end after he was released from his contract.

The 25-year-old Tongan has had an underwhelming stint at the United Rugby Championship outfit and has parted ways by mutual consent, Glasgow declared.

Wing Fifita has played just three matches since moving to Scotstoun in 2021 and a brief club statement confirmed he will now continue his career elsewhere.

Several reasons given for parting ways

“An ongoing personal legal matter” was cited as one of the factors in the player’s departure.

Glasgow have released winger Walter Fifita from his contract by mutual consent with Fifita, and his agent,” read a statement on Glasgow’s official website.

“This decision is based on performance, a lack of game time, and an ongoing personal legal matter.

“Fifita has represented the club on three occasions since his arrival during the 2021-22 season.

“This decision has been made to let Walter Fifita out of his contract early to allow him to pursue his career elsewhere.”

Scottish Rugby chairman leaving board

Elsewhere, Scottish Rugby chairman John Jeffrey is stepping down from the board in order to focus on his upcoming role with World Rugby.

The former Scotland Grand Slam winner will be ratified as vice-chair of the world governing body next month.

Jeffrey told the Scottish Rugby Union board on Wednesday night that he would be vacating his domestic role with immediate effect.

“It made sense, given the enormous demands of the World Rugby vice-chair role, especially at such an exciting time for the game, with the World Cup later this year in France, to give the SRU clarity on my intentions and to focus 100 per cent on my new role,” he said in a statement.

“It’s been an enormous privilege to have helped grow the game in Scotland over the past three years and I am looking forward to what will, I am sure, be a hugely demanding and satisfying term as vice-chair.”
