Wallabies’ Rugby World Cup skipper signs Rugby Australia contract extension
Wallabies and Waratahs hooker Dave Porecki.
Rugby Australia and the New South Wales Waratahs have announced that hooker Dave Porecki has re-committed to Australian Rugby until at least the end of 2026.
Porecki is already contracted until the end of 2024 and is two-year extension will give him a chance add to his 19 Test caps for Australia, having made his debut for the Wallabies against England in 2022.
Since making his Test bow, Porecki has become an important player for the Wallabies, and he was part of Australia’s squad at the 2023 Rugby World Cup where he became his country’s 88th captain. The 31-year-old took over the captaincy from the injured Will Skelton and skippered the Wallabies in three of their four pool matches at the global showpiece.
Started every Wallabies Test in 2023
Since his Test debut, Porecki has quickly established himself in the Wallabies set-up and he was one of just two players – alongside Rob Valetini – to start in every Test for Australia last year.
Porecki followed an unconventional path to the international arena.
After making just one Super Rugby appearance for the Waratahs in 2015, he moved to the United Kingdom, where he spent five seasons in the Premiership with Saracens and London Irish.
Porecki returned to Australia and the Waratahs ahead of the 2020 Super Rugby campaign, with an injury ruining his chances of an earlier Test debut.
Known for his accurate throw-ins at the lineout, strength in the scrums and his leadership skills, Porecki’s re-commitment is a major boost for the Wallabies and Waratahs.
“I couldn’t be happier to re-sign with the NSW Waratahs and Australian rugby for a further two years,” Porecki told Rugby Australia’s official website.
“Since returning home I’ve been able to achieve some of my personal goals, but I know I’ve got plenty more to contribute and will be continuing to work hard to be part of successful teams.
“I’d like to thank those at Rugby Australia and the Waratahs for backing me and I’ll be doing all that I can to repay that faith over the next few years.”
Rugby Australia chief executive Phil Waugh said: “To have a player and person of David’s calibre re-commit long-term is hugely positive for Australian Rugby.”
“Dave’s been a consistent performer for the Wallabies since returning home and we’re looking forward to seeing him continue to represent his state and country with pride over the next three years.”
‘Adds value to a playing group’
Waratahs head coach Darren Coleman added: “For David to have started in every Test in 2023 and finish the World Cup campaign as Captain speaks volumes to the value he can add to a playing group.
“He’s measured, mature and has a drive for perfection. He puts his body on the line week in, week out.
“David is also a keeper of standards in our group and is a great mentor to the other hookers in our program. It’s a great signing for the Tahs.”
