Gareth Anscombe kicks a drop-goal for Wales against Australia in 2023 Rugby World Cup.

Following an incredible 40-6 triumph over Australia in the Rugby World Cup clash at OL Stadium on Sunday, here are the player ratings for Wales.

15 Liam Williams: Typically committed performance from the full-back, who was excellent in the air and made very good decisions throughout. 8

14 Louis Rees Zammit: Had one opportunity to score, which was well defended by Australia, but he didn’t get too many other chances. 6

13 George North: Has turned into a very fine centre, especially defensively. Nothing got through him in that outside channel. 7

12 Nick Tompkins: Is enjoying an excellent World Cup. On both sides of the ball, Tompkins has been outstanding and deserved his try. 8

11 Josh Adams: Brilliant on the kick-chase and dangerous with ball in hand. A good all-round performance from the wing. 8

10 Dan Biggar: Did not last long before he got a nasty hit on the ribs and was replaced. N/A

9 Gareth Davies: Wales’ tactics were obvious; kick long and force the Wallabies to run from deep, and he executed extremely well. A bit cumbersome at the base at times, but he provided control on the game. 8

Stunning pack display

8 Taulupe Faletau: Warren Gatland is no doubt delighted to have him back from injury. Another top-class display from the outstanding number eight. 8

7 Jac Morgan (c): Has taken to the added responsibility of captain superbly. Assisted the first try and was excellent in pretty much every other facet, including a brilliant 50-22 kick. 8

6 Aaron Wainwright: Showed blistering speed to chase a kick off turnover and was impressive in both the tight and the loose. 7

5 Adam Beard: So, so good in the set-piece, marshalling the Welsh lineout and not giving the Wallabies a sniff. Maul also went brilliantly, with Beard stopping his opponents from making an impact. 8

4 Will Rowlands: Like Beard, he does the stuff no one sees in terms of ruck and set-piece, and is constantly involved in the game. 7

3 Tomas Francis: Scrummaged superbly and had Angus Bell in all sorts of trouble. There were a couple of nifty off-loads too! 8

2 Ryan Elias: Set-piece went smoothly and he put himself about. There have been concerns at hooker following Ken Owens’ injury, but all three have stepped up. 7

1 Gareth Thomas: Had a tough start in the scrum but gradually got on top and enjoyed a fine evening. 7

Replacements: Gareth Anscombe alone made a huge difference. The fly-half was utterly superb coming on for Biggar and was the best player on the field. Injury cruelly robbed him in 2019, but he was their star player in this game four years later. A story to cherish. 10
