Wales’ hunt for top dog hots up as leading contender leaves Premiership post for ‘new chapter’
Harlequins Director of Rugby Billy Millard watches his side warm-up ahead of Saracens clash.
Harlequins director of rugby Billy Millard will leave the club at the end of the season to embark on a ‘new challenge’, the club have confirmed.
Millard joined the club in 2018 as general manager, but progressed through the ranks to become DoR in 2023. During his time with the club, they won one Premiership title and reached the Champions Cup semi-finals as well.
His departure comes at an interesting time, though, as he is one of the leading contenders for the new Wales director of rugby role.
Billy Millard leaves Harlequins
Commenting on his departure from the Stoop, Millard said: “This decision is not one that’s been made lightly, but I am in a position to take on a new challenge in my rugby career, whilst spending time on a family project.”
He added: “My time at Harlequins has been nothing short of amazing, and I cannot thank the board, staff, players, and supporters enough for creating so many memories and friendships for my family and myself. I will continue to support everyone at the Club and drive all areas forward until the end of the season.”

Harlequins CEO Laurie Dalrymple added: “We would like to thank Billy for his dedication and contributions to our Club throughout his tenure at The Stoop. His leadership, vision, and passion for the game have helped shape our team and foster a great culture across the Club, leading to significant success on the pitch.
“While we are sad to see Billy go, we wish him and his family well as they embark on a new chapter at the end of the season.
“Whilst we will look to review and recruit as necessary, following Billy’s departure, the focus for everyone at the Club remains the same – finishing as strongly as possible across both competitions that we continue to compete in.”

Again, his departure comes at an interesting time given the links with the Wales director of rugby role. On top of Millard saying he is taking on a new challenge in his rugby career, the official statement from the club also said he is leaving for a ‘new chapter’, which suggests he is taking up a similar role within the game.
Millard is also understood to have been interested in the role with the WRU, and despite mixed reports across the British press, he is still one of the main contenders for the position alongside fellow Australian Scott Johnson.
Stuart Lancaster and former WRU performance director Huw Bevan are also touted as possible options.
WRU CEO Abi Tierney has also previously said the new DoR could be announced by the end of this month.
