Immanuel Feyi-Waboso is the name on everyone’s lips in England and Wales after his starring role in Exeter Chiefs’ victory over Bristol Bears on Friday.

The flying wing produced an outstanding display against their West Country rivals as they emerged with a 24-14 triumph which, for the time being, took the Chiefs to the top of the table.

It continued Feyi-Waboso’s fine form during the 2023/24 campaign, with the youngster enjoying a breakthrough season for Exeter.

As a result, an international call-up is likely this year, perhaps even for the Six Nations, but the question is for which country.

England or Wales

The speedster qualifies for both England and Wales, but his roots very much lie with the latter and he speaks with a Welsh accent.

Feyi-Waboso was in Cardiff’s academy before he switched to Wasps and then signed for Exeter after the Midlands outfit entered administration.

He revealed last month that he had not had contact with either national team, but was asked by TNT Sports whether that had changed.

After a pause and then a chuckle, the 21-year-old said: “I don’t know, I don’t know.”

TNT presenter Sarra Elgan, who is Welsh and interviewed the youngster on Friday, then responded: “That pause says it all. But there’s a strong Welsh accent there so I’m just putting my case forward now, okay?”

The former Cardiff and Wasps man was keeping his cards close to his chest, however, and refused to be drawn any further on the matter.

“You put your case forward, I have nothing to say on it,” he said with a smile.

Exeter’s young talent

Feyi-Waboso is one of several young players making a name for themselves this season, with their latest win another step in their development.

“It feels like just mid-20s, young 20s people running around having fun, it’s really nice. Everyone’s still learning, I’m still learning loads and I think the coaching staff are amazing for that,” he added.

“It’s good the way they’ve nurtured this young squad and obviously the results speak for themselves. We’re doing alright.

“It was really satisfying. I feel like getting wins away from home with a huge crowd is unbelievable.

“It was tough. They have a lot of big names, strong carriers. We said it was going to be a physical battle coming into it.

“At times our discipline did slip but we managed to battle through it. We’re a resilient, young group, but we managed to come out on top.”
