The Cheetahs have announced the departure of back-row Philip van der Walt to relegated Top 14 outfit Biarritz.

The Bloemfontein-based franchise have released Van der Walt from his contract to complete the move to Biarritz, who will be campaigning in France's Pro D2 division next season..

This means he will finish his Super Rugby commitments with the Cheetahs and not be available for the Currie Cup.

Van der Walt's agent Jan-Harm van Wyk revealed that although the player was happy at the Cheetahs he wanted to make a career move.

“I must emphasize that he is very happy at the Free State,” Van Wyk told the Cheetahs' official website.

“Ultimately it was purely a career decision.

“We believe that Philip will benefit from this move.”
