Two-year drug ban for WP lock

Western Province have confirmed that lock Gerbrandt Grobler tested positive for a banned substance during the 2014 Currie Cup.

The 2014 Currie Cup champions issued a press statement regarding the matter in which they said: “Up until now, given the sensitive nature of the allegations, WP Rugby was unable to comment on the matter.

“However, as of Monday, Grobler signed an admission of guilt after choosing not to contest the case against him and, thus accept, the sanctions and punishment (a two-year ban) handed down to him for testing positive for the steriod, Drostanolone.

“A remorseful Grobler has also taken full responsibility for his actions.

“WP Rugby has iterated that it and will continue to educate its players about using only approved supplements.

“We will continue to promote drug-free sport and assist the South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS) wherever possible.”
