Cardiff Blues have confirmed that Wales international flanker and captain Sam Warburton will undergo surgery on a fractured cheekbone.

Warburton suffered the injury in a clash of heads with Josh van der Flier during the 13th minute of Saturday’s 16-13 PRO12 defeat to Leinster.

Following scans and maxillofacial specialist opinion Warburton will have a small plate inserted in his cheekbone. It is estimated he will be out of action for approximately two to four weeks.
