Two-time Rugby World Cup-winning Springbok RG Snyman could be staying in Ireland, with fresh reports suggesting he is set to head to Leinster.

It has been a difficult period for Snyman at Munster, with the towering second-row having terrible luck with injuries to his Anterior Cruciate Ligaments (ACL) in both knees, amongst some other issues.

This resulted in only a handful of appearances for the club which included a run to the United Rugby Championship title last season.

Race for his signature

Interest in the Springbok has been very high since Munster confirmed they would be keeping his compatriot Jean Kleyn and allowing Snyman to leave.

Initial reports suggested he had agreed a deal to reunite with former coach Johann van Graan at Bath for a rumoured sum of £450,000 per year. While it was believed the offer had been accepted there were whispers that the Stormers had entered the race for his signature as they looked to table a bigger offer.

As the saga progressed, it seemed more and more likely he would be heading to Bath next season. But there have now been some sensational reports from the Irish Times that Snyman could be replacing the outgoing South African lock Jason Jenkins in the Leinster set-up.

Reports in South Africa state that the Durban-based Sharks are eager to sign Jenkins, who played for the Bulls, Toyota Verblitz and Munster before linking up with Leinster.

The Nienaber effect

Snyman’s move would be no surprise considering the influence of former Springbok coach Jacques Nienaber in the Leinster set-up after his recent arrival.

The 2023 World Cup-winning tactician is believed to already be making an impact at the club and his fingerprints can be seen all over the increased line speed in the Leinster defence. This was on show against La Rochelle, where the Dublin side finally managed to get one over their rivals after losing back-to-back Champions Cup finals against Ronan O’Gara’s side.

Leinster’s next assignment sees them host the high-flying Premiership outfit Sale Sharks, with the Irish province looking to maintain their winning start in the competition.
