Toulon have confirmed that Japan full-back Ayumu Goromaru will join the club for the 2016/17 season, arriving from Super Rugby outfit the Reds.

According to a Toulon statement, the 30-year-old has signed a one-year deal with the option of another season afterwards.

"He is a great player and a great pointscorer," said Toulon president Mourad Boudjellal.

"Our goal is for him to become the first Japanese player to win a major title in Europe and to work with Jonny Wilkinson (Toulon's goalkicking coach) will prepare him for the next World Cup in Japan."

Goromaru has scored 708 points in 56 Tests and was at the forefront of Japan's impressive performances at last year's Rugby World Cup in England where they finished as the first team to win three matches at the global showpiece yet fail to progress to the knockout phase.

He spent most of his club career at Jubilo Yamaha before joining the Reds a few months ago.

Toulon also confirmed that Goromaru will attend their Top 14 semi-final in Rennes, against the winner of the play-off between Montpellier and Castres, on June 18 and will be presented to the media at a press conference in Toulon on June 21.
