England head coach Steve Borthwick has named Sale Sharks duo Tom Curry and Joe Carpenter in a 33-player training squad as they prepare for their Summer Series.

The Red Rose are stepping up their preparations for the one-off Test with Japan in Tokyo before they head to New Zealand for two meetings against the All Blacks.

The squad – which does not include players involved in the Premiership final – is poised to assemble at Pennyhill Park on Tuesday, June 4 for a four-day training camp.

Six Sale Sharks named

As expected there is no place in the squad for France-based players such as flanker Jack Willis, who has been in excellent form for Toulouse during recent months.

Joining the aforementioned Sale pair in the 33 are club-mates Ben Curry, Bevan Rodd, George Ford, Raffi Quirke and Tom Roebuck, who will be keen to make an impression.

Elsewhere, the other number nines in the squad include Harry Randall and Jack van Poortvliet, while Charlie Atkinson and Marcus Smith are the other fly-half options.

Harlequins’ Luke Northmore and Exeter Chiefs’ Henry Slade are named while back three stars Immanuel Feyi-Waboso, Max Malins and Freddie Steward also make the squad.

Up front there’s spots for props Fin Baxter, Dan Cole, Joe Heyes and Joe Marler alongside Rodd. Jamie George joins Theo Dan and Gabriel Oghre as the hookers.

Further back Nick Isiekwe, Maro Itoje, George Martin and Rusi Tuima are the locks, with the versatile Ollie Chessum of course absent due to a shoulder injury ruling him out.

Chandler Cunningham-South, Alex Dombrandt, Ben Earl, Greg Fisilau, Ethan Roots and Tom Willis join the Curry brothers as the back-rowers included in the England squad.

It has also been confirmed that experienced back Elliot Daly will not tour with the England squad during the summer due to the forthcoming birth of his first child.

England‘s Summer Series will kick off on Saturday, June 22 with a Test match against Japan in Tokyo before the side embarks on a two-Test tour of New Zealand in July.
