Tasman returned to the victory trail when they claimed a hard-fought 33-23 victory over Northland in Nelson on Friday.

The home side were full value for their win, outscoring Northland by three tries to two and Marty Banks finished with an 18-point haul courtesy of four penalties and three conversions.

Tasman raced into a 20-0 lead by the 35th minute after converted tries by Tevita Koloamatangi and Quinten Strange as well as two Banks penalties.

Northland replied via a Matt Matich try which Daniel Hawkins converted, shortly before half-time, and Hawkins reduced the deficit to four points when he landed three penalties early in the second half.

The hosts struck back via a Shannon Frizell try midway through the half but Northland didn't surrender and shortly afterwards Kara Pryor crossed for their second try which meant Tasman held a slender 27-23 lead, but Banks would seal their victory with two late penalties.
