Super Bowl finalists offer advice to ‘hard worker’ Louis Rees-Zammit on his next career move
Former Wales wing Louis Rees-Zammit ihad a stint with NFL outfit Jacksonville Jaguars' practice squad.
Two of this year’s Super Bowl finalists have urged former Wales and British & Irish Lions speedster Louis Rees-Zammit not to abandon his NFL dream despite being without a contract.
Rees-Zammit is currently a free agent after his contract with NFL outfit Jacksonville Jaguars ended.
He made the move to the Florida-based side after the Kansas City Chiefs, whom he initially signed for last March after coming through the NFL’s International Player Pathway in 2024, opted to axe him from their roster.
Yet to play in the NFL
Despite switching clubs, the 24-year-old failed to make his debut during the NFL regular season, although Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson said he would eventually get an opportunity.
However, Pederson has since been fired after a dreadful season in which the Jaguars won just four of their 17 regular season matches.
The former Wales star’s future is now up in the air and he is expected to make a decision on his future soon, with a return to rugby union on the cards.
Australian NFL star Jordan Mailata, who is a former rugby league player, will be in action for the Philadelphia Eagles in Sunday’s Super Bowl against the Chiefs in New Orleans and has urged Rees-Zammit not give up his NFL dream.
“Everyone is going to face a hurdle at some point. You have to want to jump over that hurdle. I want Louis to keep going. It’s not over yet son,” Mailata said at the Eagles’ team hotel earlier this week.

Meanwhile, Chiefs assistant head coach and special teams coordinator David Taub, who knows Rees-Zammit well after working with him during his stint with the defending Super Bowl champions, had words of encouragement for the Welshman to continue.
Taub said it was obvious that Rees-Zammit had the right attitude and impressive athletic skills but he needed time to learn many of the finer details of American football.
“I love him. I really like him. He was a hard worker. He didn’t have the base fundamentals that these guys have. They’ve been playing football since fourth grade. He was just starting. The football instincts, that’s where he kind of lacked,” he told AFP.
‘I hope he doesn’t give up’
“Athletic skills? He had them everywhere. Those little small intangibles that he didn’t have, it’s going to take time. I hope he doesn’t give up. I hope he keeps trying to achieve his goal of playing American football.” he added.
Taub urged Rees-Zammit to work on improving his game before making any decision to return to rugby.
“These guys have been playing for years. Then you get thrown into that. There’s going to be a learning curve for him,” he said.
“Again, I hope he doesn’t give up. I think after two or three years, if it doesn’t click by then, time to go back to rugby.”
