Sunday Social: Champions Cup tries, signing videos and Lionel Messi

Sunday Social 18 Dec

It is time for Planet Rugby’s Sunday Social, your quirky recap of the serious and not so serious talking points from the past week’s action.

The ever-changing Twitter world produced absolute gold this week. With some ticks changing colours for various reasons, the Hurricanes brilliantly ended up with a blue tick and the Blues a yellow tick, much to the delight of William.

Step aside, Dupont, the real Antoine has arrived. French football player Antoine Griezmann shows off his rugby skills during a warm-up with his team. Not a bad pass at all from the maestro.

Probably the signing video of the year! Brilliant from Saracens using a ‘couples counselling’ theme to announce the re-signing of Elliot Daly and Jamie George! Banter level 1000.

And here’s the outtakes…

Epic scenes now as Black Ferns star Stacey Fluhler takes the World Cup to her hometown after their triumph. These are the moments players live for and ones that show the best of rugby union.

The England rugby players offer their best part of a Christmas dinner. Pigs in blankets are the winner thanks to all the forwards, but the most applicable is surely the five-hour nap after the meal!

Leinster head coach Leo Cullen brilliantly kept the RDS Stadium thawed out and ready to go regardless of the weather. Epic leadership from the man himself.

You won’t like him when he is angry! Malcolm Marx with some hulkish strength as he hangs on to a flying Pieter-Steph du Toit like the last beer at a Christmas party.

What an emotional story from Stormers star Ruhan Nel who met with Devon, who suffered a C1 fracture as he did in pre-season, but minor differences in the injuries resulted in completely different circumstances. A heartwarming story.

Staying with the Stormers and here they go coast-to-coast for arguably the best try that was never scored after it was later disallowed. The Cape Town men are truly a joy to watch when on song.

You shall NOT pass! Here’s an outrageous show of strength from Lions winger Edwill van der Merwe, who hoists the attacker away from the line in spectacular fashion. Brilliant defensive effort.

How have they done that? Extraordinary defending and intelligent rugby combine to produce the best defensive effort since Van der Merwe earlier in the day. Absolutely outstanding from the Leicester Tigers duo.

Staying with the Champions Cup but with a dashing of FIFA World Cup, here’s Sale Sharks prop Bevan Rodd showing off his skills over the weekend.

However, there’s now no question about who the footballing GOAT is after Lionel Messi’s Argentina won the World Cup Final on penalty shootouts.

Former All Blacks star Sonny Bill Williams backed him to do the business with this pre-game tweet. Rugby player, boxer, now psychic. Nice one, Sonny.
