‘Sums up Welsh rugby’ – Insult to injury as Liam Williams cops headbutt in disallowed try celebration
James Botham of Wales celebrating a try which was then disallowed with Liam Williams.
Adding insult to injury! Liam Williams copped a bit of friendly fire during Wales’ defeat to Australia in Sydney.
Wales fans will be disheartened after Warren Gatland’s charges fell to an eighth straight defeat as Joe Schmidt’s Wallabies clinched a 25-16 victory.
However, there was a humorous moment that would have got a smile on the faces of some fans as Wales full-back Williams copped a bit of friendly fire.
Liam Williams gets headbutted!
The incident occurred during the try celebration after James Botham crossed the whitewash in the second half as he charged in to congratulate his teammate.
However, Botham was slightly shoved by Tommy Reffell as Williams came towards him and he dipped his head and headbutted his full-back.
To rub salt into Williams’ wounds, the try was ruled out by the referee and his TMO, Marius Jonker.

āWe not getting any 50/50sā- Warren Gatland hits out at referee performances after Wales defeat
The incident did not go unnoticed on social media, with fans having a good chuckle about what occurred.
“Had a chuckle at this. After thinking he scored a try, this Welsh forward with the red scrum cap clearly headbutts – and hurts – Liam Williams during their try celebrations,” one fan wrote.
Another added, ‘That sums up Welsh rugby currently’.
One fan joked that it was ‘Upright, no attempt to wrap, direct contact to the head. No mitigation. Off you go son’ and another remarked that there was a ‘citing incoming’ for Botham.
With Wales struggling in 2024, having yet to win a match, one fan felt that it occurred because the side is ‘not used to celebrating tries’.
Wales will look to bounce back and claim their first win of the year when they clash with Australia in the second Test match before completing their tour with a match against the Queensland Reds.
