Stuart Hogg and Thomas Ramos were both yellow carded after a brawl broke out in the Top 14 encounter between Montpellier and Toulouse.

It occurred late on in the game with Les Rouge et Noir 20-11 ahead with three minutes remaining.

The visitors were on the attack when they made an error 10 metres out from the Montpellier line, knocking the ball on.

The incident

Ramos picked it up and was grabbed by Hogg, who duly put him into touch. The France international kept hold of the ball, however, and then rolled it away from the Scot.

The former Test full-back duly took exception to that and pushed his opponent, which angered the Toulouse players.

As a result, a brawl broke out, with Hogg eventually being grabbed around the throat by his former team-mate Blair Kinghorn.

It appeared as though Kinghorn was trying to get him away from the scuffle rather than it being an act of aggression, but the Montpellier players did not like that and he was thrown to the ground.

That further exacerbated the situation before both sets of players eventually calmed down and the referee decided on the punishment.

The man in the middle felt that Hogg and Ramos were the primary instigators and therefore sent them to the sin-bin.

Ramos commented on the incident post-match, stating that it was “slightly stupid” from him and his opponent.

“We know how important points away from home can be,” he told Canal+. “It was a slightly stupid incident from both us players. It’s not just because we’re not at home that we don’t show character. It shows the mentality of the whole team at the end of the match.”

It did not have an impact on the final scoreline as Toulouse earned a nine-point victory to sit at the Top 14 summit with three successive victories.

Meanwhile, Montpellier have lost two of their three matches domestically and are outside the play-off places.

Allegations against Hogg

Hogg initially retired from the sport prior to the 2023 Rugby World Cup but made his comeback after controversially signing a deal with Montpellier ahead of the 2024/25 season.

The French outfit decided to bring him in despite the full-back’s off-field allegations.

In May, he was charged under section one of the Domestic Abuse Scotland Act, which alleges he engaged in a course of behaviour which was “abusive” towards his former wife, Gillian.

The former Scotland international has been arrested three times this year with the latest coming earlier this month.

After he was taken into custody, Police Scotland issued a statement which read: “A 32-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with stalking offences and breach of bail conditions.

“He is due to appear before Jedburgh Sheriff Court on Tuesday, 10 September, 2024, and a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.”
