Former Scotland full-back and skipper Stuart Hogg has been arrested for a third time this year less than 24 hours before he was set to appear in court.

The ex-British & Irish international, who made a try-scoring return to professional rugby with Top 14 outfit Montpellier over the weekend, was arrested on Monday.

Also arrested in February and July

Prior to his latest arrest, the former British & Irish Lions representative was also taken into custody for allegedly stalking and breaching bail conditions. Hogg was previously arrested in February and July.

The 32-year-old made a shock comeback to the game recently, after announcing his retirements ahead of the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France, and was set to stand trial over domestic abuse charges on Tuesday.

He was first arrested in February – after a Scotland Six Nations match – at his estranged wife’s house for allegedly engaging in the course of conduct which caused fear and alarm.

He appeared in court in May, where he denied abusing and stalking his wife Gillian, and was charged under section one of the Domestic Abuse Scotland Act, which alleges he engaged in a course of behaviour which was “abusive”.

Hogg, who was Scotland’s record try-scorer until Duhan van der Merwe surpassed him in a Test against Uruguay recently, was arrested for a second time in July.

He will miss the start of training with Montpellier this week while he stands trial in the domestic violence case against his estranged wife Gillian.

‘Arrested and charged’

Police Scotland issued a statement which read: “A 32-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with stalking offences and breach of bail conditions.

“He is due to appear before Jedburgh Sheriff Court on Tuesday, 10 September, 2024, and a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.”
