Springboks great: Rassie Erasmus is doing things that ‘just wouldn’t have happened’ when I was playing

Breyton Paulse has hailed Rassie Erasmus and his Springboks coaching team for selecting younger players in the squad for the Nations Championship.
Junior Springboks Jaco Williams, Vusi Moyo and Riley Norton were shock inclusions to prepare for South Africa’s first Test match of the year against England, with matches against Scotland and Wales to follow. Erasmus’ 46-man squad includes three more uncapped players in lock Ruben van Heerden, prop Carlu Sadie and flanker Paul de Villiers.
Breyton Paulse hails Rassie Erasmus
Paulse has praised his former Springboks teammate Erasmus for fast-tracking the U20s stars into a successful environment, something he believes wouldn’t have happened during his playing days.
“They are coming into an extraordinary team environment where they can settle themselves seamlessly and adapt to the culture of the Boks,” the 64-Test cap former winger who scored 26 Test tries told IOL Sport.
“For youngsters like Vusi and Jaco, that is massive. When I was playing, something like that (selecting a 20-year-old) wouldn’t just have happened. The guys would have said, ‘You are too young and have a lot to learn’. But there is nothing like that here.
“Rassie has struck a balance between fast-tracking young stars and giving them opportunities. He always comes with one or two surprises when it comes to his squads. I mean, who would have thought someone like Riley or the other youngsters would get a chance so early?”
‘Annoying’ Paul de Villiers
One of the players that the former Springboks speedster singled out is Stormers flanker De Villiers. The 23-year-old enjoyed an incredible season in Cape Town, winning multiple man of the match awards in the URC and he was just as effective in the Investec Champions Cup.
His form earned him a place in the Boks squad and a first appearance in the senior Green and Gold jersey, coming off the bench in last weekend’s victory over the Barbarians. De Villiers could have a massive year for the Boks with Kwagga Smith ruled out for the entire international season, with the uncapped back-rower playing a similar style of game to the Bomb Squad regular.
However, Paulse has likened the former Junior Springboks captain to another 2023 Rugby World Cup winner. “He has a massive engine on him and doesn’t stop at all.
“He reminds me of Deon Fourie quite a lot, his work ethic and work rate. He is like that proverbial annoying fly that just doesn’t stop,” he said. “We are privileged to have a guy like him in the team.”

More surprises to come
Earlier this week, Erasmus stated that the current squad will not be the only players used in July, suggesting that several players will be added and leave the set-up after the opener against England, and Paulse predicts that his former teammate will continue to be unpredictable.
“Let’s wait and see the other surprises Rassie springs on us going forward.”

Meanwhile, Junior Boks head coach Kevin Foote says that Erasmus selecting U20s talents hasn’t impacted their plans and bid to defend their World Rugby Junior World Championship. He says that the two sets of coaching staff have been in regular contact around the availability of certain players.
“We are in constant contact with Rassie and Felix [Jones] and knew that these guys would get a chance against the Barbarians and against Zimbabwe,” he told reporters.
“We had ample opportunities to give a lot of players a chance to play throughout the season, and no one travelling with us to Georgia has not played for the Junior Boks before.”
