Springbok hero touted as ‘superstar in the making’ by All Blacks legends
All Blacks legends claim 'influential' playmaker is 'right up there' but deny Dupont comparisons
Jeff Wilson has labelled South Africa’s fly-half, Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, as a “superstar in the making”.
Following another thrilling weekend of Rugby Championship action, the panel of The Breakdown, including Mils Muliaina and Stephen Donald, discussed the most exciting prospects in southern hemisphere rugby.
Choosing to focus on the mesmerising Feinberg-Mngomezulu, former All Blacks star Wilson, said: “Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu was outstanding. He is the future. He is a superstar in the making.
“It wasn’t just about goal-kicking, his footwork, his creativity, his vision, his finishing. He scored 37 points in this game. 37 points in the most pivotal position in the game.
“His accuracy and work were world-class to me. As great as I think Cam Roigard is going to be, I think Sacha moves the needle for Springbok rugby.”
The 23-year-old made just his 14th Test appearance for the Springboks at the weekend, scoring 37 individual points in their Rugby Championship win over Argentina. His player of the match performance broke the South African record for the most points scored in a Test fixture, eclipsing Percy Montgomery’s tally of 35 in 2007 versus Namibia.
The backing of the forwards
Donald, a world-renowned fly-half himself, for his memorable World Cup-winning penalty exploits of 2011, added: “He’s now going to have the luxury of having that great forward pack because he’s proven that he can be the director, but also play with ambition.
“He’s got the running and kicking options; he can do it all.”
Muliaina reflected on the previous stars of Springbok rugby, commenting on the more reserved playmakers of the past.
“Over the years, you’ve had your traditional sort of first fives coming out of South Africa, where they’re very composed, they kick the corners, they kick the high balls,” the 45-year-old said. “He brings a different element because he’s so aggressive and explosive off the mark in that position.
“He can take the line on, score tries, he has the ability to kick, and his execution is on point too. So he brings a different threat.
“Man, he is going to be an absolute superstar.”
