South Africa legend makes bold November prediction for ‘best group in the Springboks’ history’
Former captain Fourie du Preez believes the Springboks can win all their Tests on November’s northern tour given the quality Rassie Erasmus has at his disposal.
The Springboks have won eight of the 10 Tests played this season with mastermind Erasmus back at the helm and face Scotland, England and Wales to close out the 2024 season.
Their two losses this season came in the second Test against Ireland and in round five of the Rugby Championship against an inspired Argentina side with some of the mainstay Springboks sitting that one out.
Superior squad
The legendary scrum-half praised the quality of the Boks squad even going as far as saying it is the best group in the country’s illustrious history.
“I believe we should be unbeaten,” Du Preez told the Rapport.
“This is probably the best group of 30 to 40 players in the history of the Boks. They also have the ability to win games, even if they don’t play their best on the day.”
Goal kicking conundrum
The Springboks have evolved this year with Tony Brown’s more expansive attacking style at the heart of that. Part of that evolution has been changes at fly-half where Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu got a run before Handre Pollard while Manie Libbok finished off the tournament.
The concern is that with Feinberg-Mngomzulu injured and Pollard’s lack of pace, the team is left without a consistent goal-kicker. Libbok is outstanding with his kicking out of hand but struggles off the tee with the loss to Argentina, another example of that as the Stormer missed the match-winning kick.
Du Preez outlined that if the Boks are to achieve their clean sweep this is an area of the game where solutions need to be found.
“Something that is important is that the set-piece kicker is accurate.”
