Scotland: Huw Jones outlines why Ireland victory is ‘the one they want’

Scotland's Huw Jones (13) celebrates scoring the second try during the Guinness Six Nations match at Murrayfield Stadium
Scotland star Huw Jones has outlined his team feel a win over Ireland is a chance for them to show their true title credentials.
Gregor Townsend’s side once again came into the Six Nations as title contenders, and got off to a perfect start with a 31-19 victory over Italy at Murrayfield; however, they face a much sterner challenge next weekend in the form of back-to-back champions Ireland.
‘We’ve wanted this one for a long time’
Ireland also come into the game following a 27-22 victory over England in Dublin, meaning both sides will be keen to prove their title credentials with a win over the other this coming weekend.
But, with that thought in mind, Jones detailed how his side have ‘wanted’ the challenge of Ireland for a long time as they hope to show their title credentials with a victory.
“We’ve wanted this one for a long time, Jones said. “But it’s a huge challenge for us.”
He added: “This is the one we want. They’ve had our number for years now, so it’s time to front up and put on a special performance. We believe we can win, but it’s going out there and doing it; that’s the real test.”
To add even more spice to things, Ireland have beaten Scotland in their previous 10 meetings, with Scotland’s last win over them coming back in 2017.
“They’re a very, very good side,” Jones continued. “They’ve shown that with all the results in the past; not just against us but a lot of other teams too.”
“It’s a real cliché, but it’s the big-match temperament; that’s what we need to find within this squad. We’ve had it in a few games but never strung it together. Next week is a chance for us to show how much growth we’ve made.”
Jones was the star of the show in his side’s win over Italy in their Six Nations opener, with the Glasgow star notching three of Scotland’s five tries on the day. The bonus point win also puts Scotland second in the table heading into round two, one place above Ireland on points difference.
A win against Simon Easterby’s side would give them some serious momentum heading into the fallow week, before they return to action with a grudge match against England at the Allianz.
