Scotland winger Darcy Graham has been ruled out of his country’s Nations Championship Tests in November and several matches during the early part of Edinburgh’s season due to injury.

Edinburgh head coach Sean Everitt revealed that Graham, who is Scotland’s leading try-scorer with 38 tries in 57 Test appearances, ruptured his bicep during a friendly clash against Harlequins last Friday.

Sidelined for at least 12 weeks

Everitt broke the news during his team announcement for Edinburgh‘s United Rugby Championship (URC) opener against Ulster at the Affidea Stadium in Belfast on Friday and said Graham is set to be sidelined for at least 12 weeks.

That means the 29-year-old will be unavailable for Scotland‘s upcoming Tests against New Zealand, Australia and Japan at Murrayfield in November, as well as a play-off clash at Twickenham.

Everitt revealed that Graham was not aware of the full extent of his injury until he received the results of a scan earlier this week.

“We haven’t had much luck as far as [injuries are] concerned,” he said. “The injuries have been pretty freakish. Darcy Graham got a contusion on his bicep in a collision on the weekend.

“He was training on Monday [only] to get the MRI report that he’s ruptured his bicep.

“That’s not good news for us and not good news for him, especially with the autumn series coming up. So he’ll be out for 12 weeks minimum.”

Apart from Graham, Edinburgh will also be without the services of other Scotland internationals in Duhan van der Merwe, Luke Crosbie, Grant Gilchrist, Ben Vellacott, Harry Paterson, Ben Muncaster, Ewan Ashman and Pierre Schoeman for their visit to Ulster.

Graham has had several injury blows during his career but he has shown plenty of resilience as he has always bounced back from those setbacks.

Everitt will be hoping for a similar response to his latest setback but will not be rushing Graham back into action.

‘Some players heal quicker than others’

“It’s not an injury that you can rush a player back from,” he added. “You know, some players heal quicker than others. [Graham being out until Christmas] would be the worst-case scenario for us and I have to prepare that way.

“And we have got depth in that position. Fortunately for us, we’ve got Duhan returning [from an ankle injury] probably in the next three weeks. We’ve got Harry Paterson who should be ready to go next week.

“So we’re well covered there. And then just to get back to the injuries, again, obviously, you know, that list is very long at the moment, but at the same time, that could become very short in three weeks’ time.”
