Saturday Social: Building up to Christmas, a great week for Argentina and Stormers, plus a dig at the RFU

Colin Newboult

It is time for Planet Rugby’s Saturday Social, your quirky recap of the serious and not so serious talking points from the past week’s action.

We start by getting into the festive spirit as the social media gurus at Six Nations Rugby put together their Christmas-based rugby team.

This period is a time of relaxation but the build-up can certainly be stressful, especially when it comes to Christmas shopping.

Love Actually is one of the most famous Christmas films and The Rugby Guy put together this brilliant skit. Superb work.

Bangor Rugby Club once again did their bit, raising money for charity by singing Christmas carols – topless of course – along the high street.

The Stormers will certainly be enjoying the festive period after recording a superb victory over the Bulls in the United Rugby Championship, with this stunning try the highlight.

Argentinians also have plenty to celebrate after their football team won the World Cup by beating France. Juan Imhoff, who plays for Paris-based Racing 92, certainly enjoyed it. It might have been a slightly awkward atmosphere over the past week, however…

London Irish have built a rather sizeable Argentinian contingent and this was their reaction to the victory.

Someone who won’t be on the Argentines’ Christmas card list is celebrity chef Salt Bae, who gatecrashed their celebrations. Super Rugby side the Blues have already issued a banning order just in case he wants to visit Eden Park.

Speaking of the Blues, check out this classic try. There was nothing better than seeing Joe Rokocoko in full flight.

Someone who has the skills to match Rokocoko, or at least he thinks he does, is Saracens and England hooker Jamie George, who produced a wonderful assist in last weekend’s victory over Lyon.

That ‘Skilful Beast’ will be joined by another one in the Premiership next season after Bath announced the signing of Finn Russell. The fly-half rather tentatively denied that he had agreed a deal with the West Country club just two days before it was announced, allowing the Bath social media guys to put this together.

Finally, Steve Borthwick was confirmed as England’s head coach during the week and this was a funny take from the Scots. It’s not entirely inaccurate either…
