Sam Warburton makes bold claim over RG Snyman’s future club that would turn heads
Sam Warburton and RG Snyman.
Former Wales and British & Irish Lions captain Sam Warburton believes RG Snyman should consider making a move to Leinster and urged the Irish province to sign the Springboks second-row.
Snyman’s current team, Munster, confirmed they would not be offering him a new contract as they look to reduce non-Irish personnel in the squad.
Added pressure in this regard came through fellow lock Jean Kleyn’s nationality switch to South Africa after previously representing Ireland in 2019.
Munster opt to retain Kleyn’s services
Ultimately, Munster opted to keep the former Ireland international who recently signed a new contract with the Limerick-based outfit.
There has been a scramble for Snyman‘s signature after it was initially suggested in the French media that he was on his way to join Bath where he would be reunited with the Premiership club’s director of rugby, Johann van Graan, who coached him while he was still playing for the Bulls.
There was also a report in South African newspaper Rapport which indicated that the Stormers are interested in acquiring Snyman’s services.
Warburton believes the influence of Leinster’s new senior coach – former Bok mentor Jacques Nienaber – will not be felt immediately and said they should try to sign a player of Snyman’s calibre.
“[Leinster] fans won’t see a drastic change,” Warburton told RugbyPass about Nienaber. “It takes time to really groove your training drills, the training regime, the messages that you want to get across.
“You might see a five, 10 percent difference in the first few weeks but to see real differences you are probably going to have to give it time. Look at Johann van Graan at Bath, it has taken a year so it takes a lot of time. I don’t think you are going to reinvent the wheel right now.
“You are just going to try and fit into some of the systems that are already in place and just tweak a couple of things… but what I think Leinster need to add is some brute force up front. That is probably what Leinster are missing when it comes to the Champions Cup.
Snyman ‘would be an amazing recruitment’
“Someone like an RG Snyman, who looks like he could be going to Bath, that would be an amazing recruitment for someone like Leinster just to add someone of that ilk into their pack.
“We’ll see. For the Leinster fans’ sake, you don’t want to be detrimental to the development of young players but you feel a couple of bolstering players in that pack would be what they need.
“Your [Will] Skeltons, your RG Snymans, that kind of player just to stick in your front five to get you over the finish line.”
