Sale Sharks have announced the signing of Jono Ross on a three-year deal, with the South African joining from Stade Français.

Ross, 26, is English qualified, who at 191cm and weighs 112kg can play six or eight. He is currently playing for Stade Français and previously played for Blue Bulls. Stade are on the edge of the play off places and still involved in the Challenge Cup.

Jono helped Stade to the Top 14 title in 2015 and has been their captain on many occasions this season. He made his Blue Bulls debut in South Africa in 2011 and he was appointed captain in only his third Currie Cup Match, becoming the first ever English speaking captain.

Sharks boss Steve Diamond said: “Jono is a great signing for us. He is a versatile player equally at home at flanker and number eight and is also a leader on the field. His ball carrying ability will be a huge asset in the Premiership. Once we knew about his availability, we moved quickly to secure his signature.

On signing for Sharks, Ross said: “I am really looking forward to this career move. I heard that Steve Diamond was showing interest in me joining the club and I met up with him a few weeks ago.

“He showed me around the Carrington Training Base and the local area and I was really impressed. I watched the game against Worcester last Friday and was impressed with the bonus point win.”

On his time at Stade Français, Ross said: ” I have enjoyed my time at the club and living in Paris has been great but I needed a new challenge and playing in the Premiership with Sale Sharks is a great opportunity for me.

“It’s not been the easiest of seasons at Stade Francais but I will giving it my best in the remaining games to hopefully leave on a high.”

Ross remembered his time in England on Saracens books and said: “I was a youngster at the time and had a couple of games for the first team.

“It was a great experience and I am looking forward to the hands on training the Premiership offers and helping Sharks to achieve their ambitions.”
