RG Snyman causes havoc as Springboks celebrate with haircuts and fresh ink

The Springboks are back in South Africa and are about to kick off their celebrations after winning back-to-back Rugby World Cups.

The team touched down in the Republic on Tuesday morning and was given a heroes welcome with thousands in attendance at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg.

Players have been documenting their movements and celebrations on social media, with lock RG Snyman in particular getting up to all kinds of mischief.

Fresh hair cuts

Snyman’s first target in the celebrations was fellow lock Eben Etzebeth, with the Munster second rower reminding Etzebeth about a conversation they had on the team’s bus a few weeks ago.

“So it was about five weeks ago, me and RG Snyman spoke on the bus, and I said if we win the World Cup, I’ll cut my hair the same as yours,” Etzebeth explained on his return to South Africa, sporting a fresh hair cut.

“Obviously, after the win in the final, it was about half past four in the morning, and the last time I drank water was in the game, and we weren’t drinking water then.

“He just reminded me of my bet, and obviously, I wanted to be a man of my word, and I mean winning this Cup with these guys, I’ll do anything.

“So just decided to cut my hair and he sat me down and Damian Willemse cut my hair. I have got a few compliments from all my friends, and my wife says it isn’t too bad; as long as she’s happy, I’m happy.

However, the haircuts haven’t stopped there with Snyman – whose name translates to ‘cutter’ from Afrikaans – managed to convince scrum-half Cobus Reinach and Willemse to get a new trim as well with all getting the same cut as Snyman.

“Someone needs to take away those clippers from RG Snyman,” one fan joked on X, formerly Twitter.

New ink

The Springboks have also wasted no time getting new tattoos in celebration of their victory.

In 2019, the likes of Steven Kitshoff, Malcolm Marx, Snyman, Franco Mostert and others got ‘Bomb Squad’ tattooed, but this time around, it was a bit more intricate with players getting the William Webb Ellis Cup with 2019 and 2023 printed underneath.

Tattoo artists came to Springboks hotel after their arrival with the likes of Willemse, Snyman, captain Siya Kolisi and Canan Moodie all pictured getting some new ink.
