Springboks head coach Rassie Erasmus has confirmed that he is in hospital after undergoing a shoulder operation.

The Boks recently arrived back in South Africa after going unbeaten during their nothern tour defeating Scotland, England and Wales.

It’s the first time since 2013 that the Boks managed to go unbeaten in November and upon their return, Erasmus has gone into hospital for a crucial medical procedure.

Rassie Erasmus confirms shoulder operation

The Rapport revealed that the Springboks head coach was going under the knife earlier this week and Erasmus confirmed the news in a voice note that he posted on social media platform X, formerly Twitter, on Wednesday evening.

“I wanted to thank the fans for the amazing support this year,” Erasmus said in the post.

“Even when we tried some things and things weren’t going well, you were always standing behind us.

“I’m having a shoulder operation here, I’m not going to show the pictures because I don’t think it’s worth showing. All OK, I think I will be out of the hospital by the weekend.”

The head coach also took the opportunity to congratulate Pieter-Steph du Toit on winning the World Rugby Player of the Year Award as well as the six other players who were named in the World Rugby Dream XV (Ox Nche, Malcolm Marx, Eben Etzebeth, Damian de Allende, Jesse Kriel and Cheslin Kolbe).

Happy holidays

He also highlighted Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu who was beaten to the Breakthrough Player of the Year Award by All Blacks star Wallace Sititi.

“To our players who made it into the Dream XV and Sacha nominated and almost got it there, we are all proud of those guys,” he continued.

“But I think as South Africans we do believe in each other and if you are happy with us – or even if you are not and send critical messages – that makes us want to work harder for you.

“I hope you have a great time over the festive season. Fortunately, we have the URC now and some of the boys are playing, to all the fans I hope you have good holidays.

“Let’s stay nice and humble, support each other and help us keep our feet on the ground. We play for you guys and for South Africa, also for those abroad who understand and see what we stand for as the Springboks – I appreciate that a lot.

“At the end of the day, it is all just a game that we are all proud of, Merry Christmas and hope you all have a lekker festive time – I will probably only hop on Twitter next again. Cheers.”
