Rampant Lions put 70 past Cheetahs

The Golden Lions continued their domination of the 2015 Currie Cup season on Saturday with a 73-31 thrashing of the Free State Cheetahs in Bloemfontein.

The Lions are now nine points clear of the Blue Bulls at the top of the table with two rounds to play. They are guaranteed a home semi-final and will host the final if they get that far.

The tournament leaders outscored their hosts ten tries to five in another impressive attacking display although, as the scoreline suggests, the game will never be used in defensive coaching manuals.

Courtnal Skosan and skipper Jaco Kriel both bagged doubles as the Lions – who are still unbeaten this year – collected their sixth bonus point from eight games.

Cheetahs flank Vincent Jobo scored a hat-trick of tries as just reward for his team's positive attitude, but their horrendous tackling meant that – once again – they were on the wrong end of a massive scoreline.

The Free Staters' four-try bonus point keeps them very much in the hunt for a play-off berth, but a home semi-final is out of the question.

The blue skies and warm sun provided perfect conditions for running rugby and the home side in particular looked hell bent on pushing the limits of an expansive game plan.

The Lions were far more clinical however, leading from start to finish in a dominant display. The men from Jo'burg led 31-10 at the interval before tearing the Cheetahs apart after the break.
