On 28 October 2023, the Springboks and All Blacks clashed in the Rugby World Cup Final at the Stade France in Saint-Denis.

It was the second time that South Africa and New Zealand had met in the World Cup final and as was the case in 1995, the Boks emerged victorious.

Scoring all of their points from the tee, the defending 2019 champions sealed back-to-back titles, defeating the All Blacks 11-12. In doing so South Africa became the first team to win the tournament four times.

Route to the final

Jacques Nienaber’s charges had the most difficult route to winning the World Cup after qualifying for the knockout stages and progressing through the pool stages, which included Scotland and Ireland.

That set up a quarter-final date with hosts France, who the Boks edged past claiming a 28-29 victory in a thrilling fixtures.

After a late penalty sealed a 15-16 win over 2019 finalists England, Nienaber’s side booked a spot in the final where they would tackle arch-rivals New Zealand.

Nienaber and then director of rugby Rassie Erasmus employed a controversial and brave 7-1 split on the bench for the finale against the All Blacks.

The coaches also made the decision to change their starting halfbacks from the ones that did service in the quarter and semi-finals.

Ten of the 23 players named to start the match also played in the 2019 Rugby World Cup victory over New Zealand, with the squad boasting an impressive 987 Test caps—the most experienced side in the Springboks’ history.
