Planet Rugby challenges you to name the Springboks team that won the Rugby World Cup in South Africa in 1995.

The Springboks famously won the tournament in their first attempt, defeating their fiercest rivals, New Zealand, 15-12 in the final at Ellis Park.

As usual, we will provide you with hints to assist you in completing the quiz, but if you think you can successfully name all 21 Springboks without any help, then skip right to the quiz.

Hints

The side coached by the late Kitch Christie featured a player dubbed ‘The Rolls Royce of Fullbacks’ who represented the Cheetahs and Sharks. He famously broke his hand during the Rugby World Cup and continued to represent the Springboks throughout the tournament.

The two starting wingers for the Springboks sadly passed away recently, with the number 11 winger notably the only black player in the team. The right winger was renowned for his compact frame but big heart, particularly on defence, as he fronted up against the legendary Jonah Lomu.

The ridiculous Rugby World Cup records that Jonah Lomu still holds

The starting outside centre made a memorable tackle on Lomu during the final and played most of his club career at the Lions before a brief stint at Yorkshire Carnegie before his retirement. Meanwhile, his starting centre partner started his international career as a fly-half, but all of 1995 in the number 12 jersey.

The fly-half in the final provided the winning score in the showpiece event, famously slotting a drop goal in extra time. His half-back partner is widely regarded as the greatest Springbok scrum-half of all time if not the best number nine in the game’s history – he, too, sadly, passed away from motor neurone disease.

Forward pack and replacement clues

Into the back-row, and the starting number eight moved into the position from the second-row. He packed down in the Sharks’ second-row for much of his playing career.

The number six famously captained the side to World Cup glory with then-president Nelson Mandela wearing a Springboks jersey with his number on it. The final back-rower is another squad member who sadly died – after a long battle with brain cancer.

Many fans know the number four as the original Springboks enforcer, and he remains in the game as a commentator and broadcaster with a South African broadcaster Supersport. Unfortunately, his second-row partner died in a car crash in 2023.

The starting hooker in the final took over the jersey following a suspension to the usual starter, who was banned after the infamous pool stage match against Canada. Remarkably, he earned his fifth Test cap in the final and only got his sixth in 1999.

On one side of the hooker was the first Springbok to win two Rugby World Cup titles. His fellow prop has become a coach and helped form the scrum calls we have today. He is widely known for comically showing referee Andre Watson a red card.

The bench included future coaches, with a Cheetahs head coach featuring along with a future Saracens boss.

A Springboks head coach, who led the side during the 2003 Rugby World Cup and was behind the infamous Kamp Staaldraad, was also on the bench.

The replacement prop would go on to represent Northampton Saints after the World Cup while the replacement back would play for Saracens.
