There have been some legends of the game that have led the Springboks, can you name them all?

South Africa have had their fair share of inspirational Springboks captains down the years but can you name every single one of them since 1995?

Since 1995, a total of 24 players have had the honour of leading the Springboks in an official Test match. Among them, three captains have led South Africa to Rugby World Cup glory, and one player has done so twice.

Springboks coaches have favoured forwards as their leaders, and that is clearly shown in the list as just four backline players have skippered the side compared to the 20 forwards.

Since Rassie Erasmus and Jacques Nienaber returned to coach the Springboks in 2018, they have selected just six new captains, the most recent of which led the Boks for the first time before the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

The player who has captained the Springboks the most times has done so on 83 occasions, at least 30 more times than any other player, and holds the record for the most consecutive Test caps for the Boks, playing 46 times.

Quiz: Can you name the ten most capped Springboks of all-time?

Littered throughout the list are several players who led the side on one or two occasions when the regular captain was not available, or the Boks opted to rest some of the frontline players.

Of the four backline players who captained the side, two were scrum-halves, one played centre, and the other is a fly-half.

Psst, Matt Damon doesn’t count!

So, with all the hints and clues out the way, have a crack at naming all the players who have captained the Springboks since 1995.
