Bath have announced that they have acquired the services of promising back-row forward Alfie Barbeary, who has signed a long-term contract at the Premiership club.

Barbeary’s commitment to the West Country outfit was announced at half-time during Bath’s clash with the Barbarians at the Recreation Ground on Sunday.

Exciting talent

The former Wasps player is regarded as one of the most exciting young talents in English rugby. He has been involved in several England squads over the past few years and has made a name for himself in the Premiership as well as European competition.

Barbeary announced himself with a try on his senior debut for Wasps just three weeks after turning 18 and has continued his fine scoring form ever since, scoring 10 times in 26 league appearances since 2019.

Formerly a hooker, the number eight has produced several player-of-the-match performances in Europe, including an outstanding performance against 2021 Champions Cup winners Toulouse, and has a 1:1 try ratio.

Currently sidelined with a hamstring issue, Barbeary joins Bath with immediate effect and will rehabilitate his injury with the club’s medical staff before returning to action later on during the 2022/23 campaign.

“Alfie is a fantastic young rugby player who will add a different dimension to our back row,” said head of rugby Johann van Graan.

“He has excellent ball-carrying ability and will provide us with momentum on the gainline.

Will complement Bath’s pack

“He has a number of great qualities which will complement our pack and he has an appetite to improve and contribute to Bath Rugby over the coming years.

“We are really excited to have Alfie on board for the next step of our journey.”
