'Outstanding' Welsh/Wales international secures 'surreal' transfer to Leicester Tigers

Leicester Tigers have confirmed the signing of Wales back-rower Aaron Wainwright ahead of the 2026/27 season.

The 28-year-old Welshman will join the club this summer from the Dragons, where he has made 129 appearances since debuting in 2017.

The 62-cap international made his Wales debut in 2018 and has gone on to win a Six Nations Grand Slam, as well as appearing in two Rugby World Cups. He will join international teammates Olly Cracknell and Tommy Reffell at the Tigers.

A versatile player, Wainwright is most comfortable playing at number eight, but is equally adept on either flank. He is instantly recognisable due to his blonde moustache and mullet combination, which will quickly make him a fan favourite in no time.

“Damn shame but totally understandable”

Dragons fans are understandably disappointed to see their man leaving, with one saying: “Sad to see Aaron leave but wish him all the best at Leicester and hopefully he returns to the Dragons at some point”, while another added: “Damn shame but totally understandable amongst the chaos of our game.”

The general consensus seems to be one of understanding, with another pointing out that if he had played for another club, he could have been on the plane to Australia last summer: “Good luck Wainoo, would love you to stay but totally understand why you need to move on. Would’ve been a lion if you weren’t a dragon imho”

“An outstanding back-rower”

Geoff Parling said as the Welshman’s addition was confirmed, “I’m really excited for Aaron to join from next season.

“He’s an outstanding back-rower that has shown that he can consistently perform for both club and country.”

“He comes with great character references and wants to improve his game. We look forward to him adding value to our squad and showing what he can do in a Leicester shirt.”

Discussing his decision to join Leicester Tigers, Wainwright said, “I’m really excited. When you look at the long history of success that the club has had, to be able to come into that and hopefully contribute going forward is what I can’t wait to do.

“It was a little bit surreal when I was told of Tigers’ interest. I’ve watched the club and I’ve seen how competitive and physical Tigers are, and I’m buzzing to be a part of that.”

“A massive draw for me was watching the games in the Gallagher PREM and seeing a packed out Mattioli Woods Welford Road. The chance to play in front of that crowd every other week is something I can’t wait for.”

The 28-year-old is the first name that will be added to Parling’s first team squad ahead of the 2026/27 season.
