Cheetahs flyer Sergeal Petersen will be on the sidelines for between four and six weeks due to a knee injury.

According to a Supersport report, Petersen sustained the injury during the Cheetahs' 28-25 defeat in their Super Rugby opener against the Lions in Bloemfontein at the weekend.

Subsequent scans showed that the 22-year-old has a strained MCL injury and will be out for at least a month.

His injury is the latest setback for the Cheetahs who have lost the services of several back-line players recently. First-choice outside centre and captain Francois Venter will be sidelined for another two weeks with an ankle injury.

Fellow midfielder William Small Smith will go for X-rays on Friday on a hand injury and another centre Michael van der Spuy has concussion and will undergo tests again on Wednesday.

Scrum-half Shaun Venter is battling a hamstring injury and is set to return to action in two weeks time.
