Munster's new signing Thaakir Abrahams is a perfect replacement for retiring legend Simon Zebo.

Munster Rugby have announced their ninth signing ahead of the 2024/25 season with speedster Thaakir Abrahams joining from French club Lyon.

The South African outside back has signed a two-year with the Irish province, returning to the United Rugby Championship after just one season with Lyon.

The elusive back played 13 matches for Lyon this season after signing for the club from the Sharks and impressed in the Investec Champions Cup scoring four tries.

24-year-old Abrahams is a like-for-like replacement for retiring Munster legend Simon Zebo with his ability to play wing and fullback.

After captaining Paarl Boys High in his school days, Abrahams went on to represent South Africa at U20s level, also signing for the Sharks after school.

He quickly made his mark for the Sharks, representing the side in Super Rugby, the Currie Cup and URC before departing for Lyon last summer.

With the outside back’s rapid pace and a keen eye for a gap, Abrahams’s style of play has earned him comparisons to Springboks’ star Cheslin Kolbe.

He showed those traits with a spectacular solo try for Sharks against Leinster, which was nominated for the 2022/23 URC Try of the Season.

Munster Rugby and IRFU announced Abrahams’ arrival, which takes their tally to nine, following the confirmation of Billy Burns, Tom Farrell, and Diarmuid Kilgallen’s signings.

Meanwhile, Brian Gleeson, Edwin Edogbo, Mark Donnelly, Tony Butler and Ethan Coughlan will all be stepping up to the senior squad.

Finally, Eoghan Clarke and Oli Jager joined the province mid-season with Clarke recently penning a one-year extension with Jager signing until 2027.

Keynan Knox, RG Snyman, Joey Carbery, and Antoine Frisch all join Zebo in leaving Munster at the end of the season.
