Munster Rugby have announced that their chief executive, Ian Flanagan, will step down from his position with the Irish province at the end of October.

The United Rugby Championship outfit made the announcement in conjunction with the Irish Rugby Football Union via a press statement on Thursday.

Flanagan has been in his position since 2019 and news of his imminent departure comes after he received plenty of criticism from Munster supporters and former players with governance issues at the Irish province.

The statement on Munster’s official website read: “Munster Rugby and the IRFU today confirm that Ian Flanagan has informed the board of Munster Rugby of his decision to step down from his position as CEO at the end of October.”

Munster Rugby chairperson Ger Malone paid tribute to Flanagan for his service to the province over the past seven years.

“Ian has served Munster Rugby with dedication and commitment during his time as CEO,” he said.

“He played a central role in the development and delivery of the €7.3 million Centre of Excellence in Cork, which represents an important long-term investment in player development and the wider game across the province.

‘Wish him every success for the future’

“On behalf of the board, I would like to thank Ian for his contribution to Munster Rugby and wish him every success for the future.”
