Munster have been struck by an injury setback after it was confirmed that star Springboks lock RG Snyman is set to have surgery on a chest/shoulder injury.

The 28-year-old has been celebrating lifting the Rugby World Cup with his home country after they edged New Zealand 12-11 in the final in Paris on October 28.

Surgery for Snyman

Snyman featured prominently for South Africa during the campaign on French soil as he and team-mate Jean Kleyn represented Munster with solid outings.

However, the positivity of their performances in Springboks colours have now been soured by news that the forward is set to have surgery in South Africa.

“RG Snyman suffered a chest/shoulder injury during the World Cup final and will undergo surgery in South Africa this week,” read the statement from Munster.

He’s been dogged by injury issues in recent years but returned to fitness during the back end of last season in their United Rugby Championship title triumph.

The length of Snyman’s absence has not been confirmed but Munster fans will hope it is not a substantial period of time as he was outstanding late last term.

Munster are currently preparing for this Friday’s match at Ulster where a win would see them move to the top the table, with Connacht playing on Saturday.

Ireland stars back

Ireland duo Craig Casey and Jack Crowley returned to action in the win over Dragons while there is a further boost on Monday as Tadhg Beirne, Dave Kilcoyne, Jeremy Loughman, Conor Murray and Peter O’Mahony have also rejoined their Munster team-mates following their World Cup involvement.

Munster are sweating over the fitness of Calvin Nash after he was withdrawn with a knee injury on Saturday night and will be assessed by the medical team.

Elsewhere, Simon Zebo (foot) and Josh Wycherley (neck) both return to full training this week and are available for selection for the massive away game.
