Former Hurricanes and Northampton Saints boss Chris Boyd has joined Munster's coaching staff.

Munster and the Irish Rugby Football Union have announced that they have appointed Chris Boyd to the province’s backroom staff as their performance consultant.

In his position, Boyd will support interim head coach Ian Costello and Munster’s wider coaching group during the coming months while also providing support to the wider aspects of team performance.

The New Zealander has a distinguished coaching career and in 2015 he took charge of the Hurricanes and guided them to the final of that year’s Super Rugby final which they lost to the Highlanders.

He continued his coaching stint with the Wellington-based outfit and the following year they reached the Super Rugby final again and won the title by beating the Lions.

Boyd left the Hurricanes in 2018 to take up the position of director of rugby at Premiership club Northampton Saints ahead of the 2018/19 campaign and throughout the 66-year-old’s four-year tenure, oversaw the return of the English club to regular knockout rugby at domestic and European level.

Munster chief executive Ian Flanagan is excited by Boyd’s appointment.

‘Thrilled to have someone of Chris’ experience’

“We are thrilled to have someone of Chris’ experience and calibre join us for what will be a very busy period for the club,” he said.

“We have a huge amount of trust and belief in our coaching group who have done an excellent job over the past month and the addition of Chris will supplement the talent we have in this area.”

Costello echoed Flanagan’s sentiments and is looking forward to working with Boyd.

“We are fortunate to have an outstanding coaching group and support team in Munster,” he said.

“To be able to add someone of Chris’ experience and standing to that group is very exciting.”
