Leicester Tigers head coach Michael Cheika has completed the signing of Fiji international fly-half Ben Volavola, who is the Australian’s first arrival since joining the club.

The number 10 has played over 200 professional games, including winning 38 caps for his country. Volavola has also featured in two World Cup campaigns.

The versatile 33-year-old is a journeyman of the sport and spent the last seven seasons in France, playing for Racing 92, Perpignan and most recently, Agen.

Has been coached by Cheika

Volavola has also played for the Melbourne Rebels, Crusaders and before that the Waratahs in Super Rugby, the latter under the tutelage of coach Cheika.

He is delighted to have secured the services of the Fijian who joins Handre Pollard, Jamie Shillock and Joseph Woodward as fly-half options at the Tigers.

“We’re very pleased to be able to add a player of Ben’s experience and quality to the squad,” said Cheika, who recently replaced the outgoing Dan McKellar.

“Ben’s knowledge of northern-hemisphere rugby from his time in France is a plus, and his experience at international level is invaluable.

“I know he’s a man of good character and will add value to our environment.”

Volavola admitted he “jumped at the chance” to join Leicester and is looking forward to joining the Premiership side as they prepare for the 2024/25 season.

“I am honoured and excited to join this club, and this talented group,” he said.

“I’ve been waiting for the right opportunity and after speaking to (Michael), I jumped at the chance to come to Leicester and I’m excited to see what we can do this season.”

Leicester finished the 2023/24 campaign in a disappointing eighth position so will be determined to bounced back under Cheika.
