Louis Bielle-Biarrey the bolter as France name incredibly strong squad for home Rugby World Cup
Louis Bielle-Biarrey in action for France v Fiji in Rugby World Cup warm-up.
Bordeaux-Begles youngster Louis Bielle-Biarrey has been selected in France’s 33-man squad for their home Rugby World Cup.
The 20-year-old was handed his debut in their opening warm-up match against Scotland and impressed, scoring a try in the first half.
He then featured against Fiji in Nantes and once again starred as Les Bleus overcame the Pacific Islanders 34-17.
The unlucky wing
Bielle-Biarrey gets in ahead of Ethan Dumortier, who is the unlucky man to miss out in the back three having shone in the Six Nations.
Damian Penaud and Gabin Villiere are the other primary wing options, while Yoram Moefana can also play there if required.
Moefana’s versatility gave him the edge on another 20-year-old, Pau centre Emilien Gailleton, whose writing was on the wall when he was not selected for last weekend’s clash.
Gailleton misses out to Jonathan Danty and Gael Fickou, who were automatic picks, as well as Arthur Vincent – a player head coach Fabien Galthie rates very highly.
At full-back, Melvyn Jaminet is chosen ahead of Brice Dulin following his efforts on Saturday and will likely be the back-up to Thomas Ramos at the global tournament.
There are few other surprises in the backline, although Baptiste Serin can perhaps count himself unfortunate with Baptiste Couilloud going as the third scrum-half.
Meanwhile, in the other half-back position, Matthieu Jalibert and Antoine Hastoy will compete for the fly-half spot after Romain Ntamack was ruled out.
Forward selections
France are equally powerful up front and they are boosted by the inclusion of Anthony Jelonch, who makes it despite not playing a game since the third match of the Six Nations.
He is joined in the back-row by Paul Boudehent and Sekou Macalou, with Dylan Cretin and Yoan Tanga omitted from the 33.
In the second-row, the return of Paul Willemse and Cameron Woki means that Bastien Chalureau is the unlucky lock.
Finally, the front-row is as expected with Cyril Baille making it despite suffering an injury in France’s victory over Scotland on August 12.
