Leicester Tigers finally complete coaching staff after swooping for Catalan Dragons and ex-Brumbies gurus

Leicester Tigers have announced a double backroom signing after Peter Hewat was confirmed as their new attack coach while Matt Parr joins from Catalan Dragons.

Hewat, who made his name in the game at the Waratahs in Super Rugby, also excelled during his spell at Premiership side London Irish as he shone for the Exiles.

The 46-year-old would finish his playing career at Suntory Sungoliath and after hanging up his boots he moved into a coaching role before returning to Australia.

Familiar face

He is a familiar face to current Leicester Tigers head coach Dan McKellar as the pair worked together at the Brumbies, helping them to the Super Rugby AU title.

Hewat then left to join Japanese side BlackRams Tokyo and after three seasons in the country he will now reunite with McKellar as he takes over as attack coach.

“I’m excited to be joining Leicester Tigers,” said Hewat.

“Having played in the Premiership previously, and having experienced the incredible atmosphere at Mattioli Woods Welford Road, I have an understanding of the history and expectations of the club and I’m determined to help achieve success here.

“This is a world-renowned team and I’m looking forward to working with Dan and the rest of the coaching group to help the team reach its goals and grow our attack.”

The Premiership giants also confirmed the return to the Tigers of former prop and staff member Parr, who will take up the position of head of athletic performance.

The former Sale Sharks, Saracens and London Irish prop was part of Leicester’s strength and conditioning team during the 2015/16 season and rose up the ranks.

Parr decided to join rugby league outfit Catalan Dragons in 2022 but has now taken up the opportunity to return to Leicester and is looking to make a big impact.

“This is a very special opportunity for me,” he said.

“I’m thankful to Catalan Dragons for my time there and I’m very excited to bring the knowledge and experience I’ve gained back to Tigers.

“The club means a lot to me, and I’ll drive through the gates at Oval Park ready to get stuck into pre-season to prepare the players for the upcoming season.”
