Wales legend Justin Tipuric has been granted permission to miss the Ospreys’ fixture with the Sharks in London to play against his country for the Barbarians.

Tipuric, who retired from international duty before the Rugby World Cup, has since been concentrating on club matters with the United Rugby Championship side.

However, the region released a statement on Tuesday confirming that the flanker will be unavailable for this Friday’s match against the Sharks at The Stoop.

Tipuric statement

The statement was in the words of the legendary back-row as he revealed his gratitude to the club for allowing him to play against his friends for the Baa-baas.

“I’m honoured to be given the opportunity to play for the Barbarians against Wales,” Tipuric said, with that Cardiff clash coming shortly after the World Cup.

“It’s a shame the game falls on the same weekend as Ospreys first game in London against the Sharks, which is important to the club and a game I was really looking forward to.

“After discussing it with Toby (Booth) and the team, I’m incredibly grateful that the Ospreys are supportive of my decision and have allowed me to play for the Barbarians.”

He added: “It was a difficult decision to make, but this is a once in a lifetime opportunity for me to face my home nation and play against some of my best mates.”

Tipuric will face off against some familiar faces, none more so than Leigh Halfpenny, who is playing in his final Test before retiring from international duty.

The 34-year-old full-back is set to prolong his career, with Japan considered to be the most likely destination ahead of an official announcement next week.

“It’s all done,” Halfpenny said ahead of his farewell game after playing 101 times for his country.

“I’ve got a contract for another season and then we’ll see what happens after that. I’m looking for that to be announced next week.”

Absolute privilege

The two-time British & Irish Lion added: “I’m just grateful for the opportunities I’ve had to wear the jersey over the last 15 years.

“It’s been an absolute privilege to put on the Welsh shirt and I’m really excited for Saturday.

“I’ve got a few friends and family coming along, and I’m looking forward to going out one last time.

“To run out alongside guys like Alun and Justin Tipuric, albeit they’ll be on the opposite side, and share the field with those two greats of the game and Welsh legends again will be pretty special.”
