Although the Sharks’ returning Springboks contingent are not yet at their best, they should reach peak form when the Durban-based outfit host Munster next weekend.

That was the word from Sharks head coach John Plumtree after his side clinched a 28-24 victory against defending United Rugby Championship champions Glasgow Warriors in Durban on Saturday.

Over the years, one of the Sharks‘ persistent challenges have been the reintegration of their Springbok players upon their return from Test duty.

Their Boks, who were back in action after last playing for South Africa in the Rugby Championship, made valuable contributions in the victory over Glasgow despite the champions scoring two tries in the game’s closing stages.

Late Glasgow tries added some respectability to the final score

Those scores from Johnny Matthews and Rory Darge added some respectability to the final score and secured two crucial bonus points for the champions.

“It’s been a pretty nerve-wracking week,” said Plumtree after the Sharks got their campaign back on track following their recent overseas tour which saw them beat the Dragons but suffer losses to Connacht and Benetton.

“Obviously the Boks were a bit rusty after three weeks off, and at the same time we wanted to give some of the guys who were on tour a break. We just tried to bring everyone together and get the balance right.”

In the backline, Aphelele Fassi continued with his fine form while Makazole Mapimpi was solid on attack and defence while the likes of Ox Nche, Bongi Mbonambi and Eben Etzebeth put in huge shifts while Siya Kolisi celebrated his return – after a season in France with Racing 92 – by crossing for a well-taken try.

‘Formidable opposition’ from Glasgow

“Glasgow always offers formidable opposition and tests you in every facet of the game,” added Plumtree. “At times, we built up nice momentum and looked impressive, but at other times we were definitely a bit rusty.

“You can’t underestimate how good Glasgow are. They’re a true champion team and put you under pressure throughout.”

Plumtree expects improvement from his returning Springboks when they host Munster at Kings Park in Durban in their final URC match before the November international window.

“The Boks should already perform much better next weekend (against Munster), which will enable us to dish out good play for longer periods,” he said.
