Joe Marler reveals 'relief' following Traitors final as he reveals how much he got paid

Joe Marler has admitted he’ll be pleased not to lie to his wife anymore about the result of the Celebrity Traitors after the final was televised on Thursday.

The former England prop was one of the standout stars on the BBC television program, as 19 celebrities came together to win a prize of just over £87,000 for their chosen charity.

The inaugural celebrity version of the popular show was well received by the public, with 12 million viewers tuning in to watch the thrilling finale.

Who won Celebrity Traitors? – (Spoilers ahead)

As the final four reached the endgame, the stakes could not have been higher. After Marler had been the deciding vote in the previous round, securing traitor Cat Burns’ exit from the game, there remained just one traitor left in camp – Alan Carr.

Neither Nick Mohammed nor David Olusoga, both faithfuls, knew if there was still a traitor within their midst, but alongside Joe, they suspected there was.

It was Joe’s apology to Cat in the previous round that would prove to be his downfall, however, with Mohammed believing it to be a ‘traitor move’. As a result, Nick struck the metaphorical sword into Marler’s back, sending the faithful prop packing.

With Marler out of the way and the other faithfuls believing they were free of traitors, it left Carr to deliver the final blow in an explosively entertaining piece of television.

Speaking to BBC Breakfast, Marler reflected on his time in the castle and the response from the public since. Asked how his week’s been, Joe joked, saying that it had been “quiet” and that he had simply been “mowing the garden”, before admitting: “It’s been carnage.

“I thought that when the Traitors would come out on Thursday, that by Friday morning, it would be done. Everyone just starts focusing on Christmas now, right?

“Turns out it is the opposite, they’re all still talking about. And I was like, ‘Oh, this happened, did it?’ But it’s been good fun. There are worse things to be doing than what we’re doing now.”

Although the former rugby star is set to become very busy for the foreseeable future, he has found a sense of relief that he can now speak freely to his wife again.

“I think the only relief I’ve got is I now don’t need to lie to my wife”, he said, admitting that he’s had to keep the result quiet from her for the last six months because she didn’t want to know.

“I told her nine different stories of what ended up, so when she got to the final, she was as surprised as anyone was.”

How much were the Celebrity Traitors paid?

The celebrities were all paid to appear on the Traitors, but Marler explained that not everyone received the same amount. Speaking to The Times, he said: “I don’t think everyone got paid the same. But I’m not bothered. It was 30 grand whether you lasted two days or three weeks – a no-brainer.”

Acknowledging that he felt out of his depth amongst many of the famous names, Marler added: ‘The majority didn’t know who I was. Most of them thought I was a production guy lugging stuff around. That played in my favour. I’d heard of all of them except Niko, David, and Ruth. In celebrity terms, I was out of my depth. And then, when they did get to know me a bit, they thought I was weird.”

Sadly, during filming, his wife’s nan died, causing the 35-year-old to almost leave the set – and he would have done if it wasn’t for his wife.

“The producers already knew she was terminally ill, so I went to them and said, ‘That’s me done’. They were great. I was leaving, then Daisy rang back and said, ‘Look, there’s not a lot you can do right now, so just stay up there until you get kicked out’.

“That was the moment that I was like, ‘Right, I’ve had enough of this impostor syndrome. I’m gonna ramp it up, go hell for leather and if I get banished or murdered, it’s a win, I can go home.'”

As it was, Marler made it right to the end, becoming a fan favourite and almost winning the lot.
