Stephen Ferris has had some fun on X.

Ireland legend Stephen Ferris mischievously stirred the pot after their 25-24 win over South Africa in Durban on Saturday, sending an eight-word post to an ex-Springbok.

Ferris was clearly in a jubilant mood after the dramatic triumph that tied the series 1-1, this after Ciaran Frawley kicked two stunning late long-range drop goals at Kings Park.

Taking to X after full-time, the former Ulster flanker took aim at Springboks great Victor Matfield, who had been vocal in recent weeks about Ireland‘s standing in the game.

“Ireland now the best team in the World @VictorMatfield,” the 38-year-old wrote on Saturday, ending the post that has been liked over 750 times with a tongue out emoji.

Ferris‘ post comes after former second-row Matfield recently took aim at Wales legend Sam Warburton for a comment made in February that Ireland are better than the Boks.

That clearly angered both Matfield and former Lions head coach Swys de Bruin on a SuperSport talkshow two weeks ago, with the pair incredibly riled up over Warburton.

“I don’t think he has (Warburton) made a final, no, he hasn’t made a World Cup final. He hasn’t made a semi-final of a World Cup. Now you want to tell everyone that Ireland, who hasn’t made a semi-final in a World Cup, is the best team in the world when South Africa has won back-to-back,” former Springbok Matfield stressed in a heated debate.

“He must live in his own world.”

Warburton did, of course, play in a Rugby World Cup semi-final for Wales, against France in New Zealand in 2011, but was unfortunately red-carded for a tip tackle.

Matfield’s comments were a precursor for his and De Bruin’s take on Ireland and also pundits from the northern hemisphere who De Bruin believes sensationalise news.

“The pundits overseas, they are sensational guys. It’s not about facts. Victor gave the facts,” said the coach.

“Sam is a great player but he can’t tie Victor’s shoelaces when it comes to experience and say what he wants to say.”

Matfield has yet to respond to Ferris but replies to the post have been mixed, with some retorts of course touching on Ireland’s Rugby World Cup record at the knockout stage.

Ireland now take a well-earned break at the end of a tough season while the Springboks face Portugal this coming week before the Rugby Championship begins on August 10.
