Ireland international fly-half Joey Carbery will leave Munster at the end of the season in order to take up a playing opportunity outside of the country, it’s been confirmed.

Carbery, who has played 37 times for Ireland, arrived at the province from Leinster in 2018 and quickly became a favourite in the red jersey among the club’s supporters.

However, opportunities were limited in 2022/23 as Munster opted for Jack Crowley or Ben Healy at fly-half during their run to the United Rugby Championship (URC) title.

Heading overseas

Healy was already set to leave the province at the end of that campaign which meant Carbery was poised for more game time this season until a serious wrist injury struck.

That has kept the fly-half sidelined over recent weeks but he’s nearing a return to rugby action and could play a pivotal role in what will now be his final matches for Munster.

Carbery, who began life at the club in fine style as he scored six tries in his first 15 games, was nominated for the 2018/19 Munster Rugby Player of the Year award.

The New Zealand-born number 10 has gone on to make 56 Munster appearances and score 477 points to date, with head coach Graham Rowntree full of praise for him.

“Joey has contributed a huge amount to Munster Rugby on and off the pitch since joining six years ago,” he said as the province announced Carbery’s impending exit.

“A fantastic professional, he has been a pleasure to coach and is a hugely popular member of the squad.

“We will wish him and his family all the best when the time comes but there is still plenty of rugby to be played this season.”

Massive thank you

Carbery said: “I want to say a massive thank you to Munster Rugby and the Munster fans for the last six seasons.

“I’ve loved every minute, through the good and bad days. Thomond Park and Musgrave Park will always be special places for me.

“I’m excited for a fresh start next season but motivated to give my best and end this season on a high.”

Munster are currently preparing for a Champions Cup game against Toulon on the road before they play host to Northampton Saints in the same competition in Round Four.

Following that Rowntree’s outfit play a friendly match against Super Rugby Pacific giants the Crusaders on February 3 before returning to URC action against Scarlets.
