Sean Jansen signs new Connacht deal.

Ireland number eight Sean Jansen has put pen to paper on a new two-year contract with Connacht ahead of the United Rugby Championship (URC) season.

The powerful back-rower is Connacht’s reigning Player of the Year after an outstanding campaign in the green jersey, which resulted in him making his international bow.

Jansen’s contract was due to expire at the end of the upcoming 2026/27 season, but he has now agreed an additional extension, locking him in until 2029 at the earliest.

Powerful carrier

Jansen has gone from strength to strength since joining the club from Leicester Tigers in 2023. A powerful number eight, he’s become a fan favourite with the Connacht fans due to his ball-carrying ability and try-scoring exploits. Last season he scored 12 tries in 20 games, while he also finished third on the URC table for tackles made (219).

His performances saw him deservedly voted Connacht Player of the Year by his teammates, and he was subsequently included in the Ireland squad for the Nations Championship fixtures in July. He made his Test bow against Japan and was named Player of the Match after scoring a try, earning him a place in the 23 v New Zealand a week later.

“I’ve loved every moment of my three years here in Ireland, and I want to thank all the teammates, staff and especially the supporters for making me feel so welcome,” said Jansen.

“It’s obvious based on how we finished last season that there’s something special happening here. We’re a tight-knit group who come into training every day to push ourselves and help deliver the success I know we’re capable of.

“We’re also lucky to work with such a talented group of coaches led by Stu.

Silverware pledge

“All I want to do now is to keep playing and contributing where I can, and bring silverware to the West.”

Connacht head coach Stuart Lancaster is delighted to have re-signed one of his star players and believes it’s just reward for Jansen’s superb performances last season.

“Securing Sean’s future is a massive boost for everyone at Connacht. He played a big part in our push to the play-offs and Champions Cup rugby last season, culminating in that deserved international debut over the summer,” he praised.

“He’s only 27 so his best years are still ahead of him, and having him commit to Connacht until at least 2029 is a statement of intent both by Sean and the club.”
