Italy international scrum-half Stephen Varney has left Premiership outfit Gloucester with immediate effect after signing a contract with Top 14 side Vannes.

A product of the Gloucester Rugby Academy, the 23-year-old was promoted to the first team in George Skivington’s first year at the club and has flourished ever since.

Impressing in Premiership action, the Welsh-born number nine was called up to represent Italy, whom he qualified through his mother, in 2020 against Scotland.

30 caps for Italy

He has gone on to cement his place for the Azzurri, winning 30 caps to date, but at Gloucester has struggled to nail down the starting jersey thus far this campaign.

“It’s no secret that we’re in a good position in terms of half-backs,” said Skivington when discussing his scrum-half’s exit.

“Tomos (Williams) is one of the best scrum-halves in the game, and he’s shown that in his first few appearances here. We’ve also got Caolan Englefield and Charlie Chapman here who we see a lot of potential in.

“Steve is someone I invested a lot of time and trust in when I came in, and he’s developed into a fantastic player for club and country. It’s understandable why he wants to move and get some more regular game time.

“I’m really thankful for Steve’s contributions in Cherry and White but ultimately this move makes complete sense for all concerned.”

Varney added that he departs with no hard feelings and is “grateful for the opportunity” he was given at Gloucester as he now looks forward to the “next chapter”.

“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time at Kingsholm. There’s a great group of lads here and they’re doing some exciting stuff,” he said.

“I’d like to thank Skivs and the coaches for giving me my first shot at professional rugby, I’ll forever be grateful for the opportunity I was given here.

A special group

“Finally, I’d like to thank the Gloucester fans who have supported myself and the team through my time here. They’re a special group of the fans and they deserve the good times that I hope are coming.

“Whilst I’m sad to be leaving Gloucester, it’s a great opportunity for myself personally and I’m really excited for the next chapter.”

Vannes, who brought in Mako Vunipola in the off-season, currently sit bottom of the Top 14 standings after losing six of their opening seven games this campaign.
