Major League Rugby: Five takeaways as ‘three-peat’ on for New England Free Jacks after TV blackout while beaten Utah left with ‘sour taste’

The final of the Major League Rugby season pitches the Eastern and Western Champions against each other to determine the best team in US rugby.

Plenty at stake for both teams

Houston are hoping to win the first title in the franchise’s seven-year history after beating Rugby Football Club Los Angeles and then the highly fancied Utah Warriors to reach their first final.

New England Free Jacks would be the first team to win three consecutive Major League Finals in a row if they defeat the SaberCats.

They qualified by beating Chicago Hounds 21-20 after coming behind from a 17-point half-time deficit.

The tournament started in February with 11 teams split between a Western and an Eastern Conference, with each team playing eight home and eight away matches before a cross-conference playoff to determine the winner.

The winners of the tournament will lift the MLR Shield this weekend.
